The Biggest Population of White Storks in Central Europe
The Polish White storks choose the “east route” across the Bosporus. Also many of the storks from the Elbvally in Germany first fly the eastern route over Poland and the northern edge of the Czech border at the Siebengebirge. Poland has the biggest Storks population in central Europe. According to the last statistics, approximately 40.900 couples nest here. They breed more than 100,000 young storks. One quarter of the worldwide circa 160.000 pairs of White storks, spend the European summer in Poland. Mostly they live near the rivers and lakes in the eastern side of the country in Warmia, the Masurian lakes and in Podlasie. The polish record 2004 had the village Zywkowo at the Masurian lake area, where 45 pairs nestle. Since this place is open for tourism in 1999, almost 2000 people from all over the world had visited this landscape. Most the Polish “Stork village” with more than 10 pairs are in the north-east. In south of Podlasie there are more than 1300 storks nesters. In Lwowiec, near Ketrzyn, there are about 40 nesters. In Lejdy near Bartoszyce there are even 8 nesters on a single farmstead to admire, half of them are on the same barn.
Stork-Museum KŁOPOTRecently is also 60 km of Zielona Gora (and 40km south of Slubice) located (situated) Klopot a storks village. 20 storks pairs hatch here yearly. Therefore Ktopot possesses the biggest storks population in west Poland. Here to date there is only white storks museum in Poland. The Museum was opened in April 2003.The establishment bearer, the Polish Nature Protection League (Lige Ochrony Przyrody), established the Museum in an old school building in the 160 habitants village Ktopot. Ktopot is located in a 8546 ha big Krzesin Landscaped Park of which the centre is formed by the meadow between the Oder River and the Altrarm Krzesin. The wetlands in Oder Valley, as well as the willows and the arable land offer an excellent food supply for the storks. The landscaped park is the living environment for a wide range of animals and plants. In collaboration with the landscaped park, furthermore the museum carrys out lessons on environmental education. The beauty region invites also for exploration tours, as walk or with the bicycle Excursion to Klopot
