White Storks and other

migratory birds

in Palestine

For cranes and other migratory birds the green medows of the Jordan Valley are high frequented rest areas. Also White Storks, Black Storks, many species of birds of prey as well as countless of small species rest here before continuation.

To establish research about the bird migration in the Palestinian territories, the Palestine Wildlife Society  founded a bird ringing center in Jordan, near Jericho.

For this purpose many volonteers plantet palm trees and other native plants on an area, that was damaged by erosion. For irrigation and for the weffare of the migratory birds they layed three ponds with an extant of  150, 750 and 5000 square meter.

Meanwhile the center gathers and records dates about the migration pattern and it trains future practitioners of nature conservation. Students and scholars come here in order to do research and to learn as well as to participate in work projects.

Also for tourists this oase of nature grows to an intesesting place to become acquainted with the regional flora and fauna. The vision and long term objectives of the Palestine Wildlife Society´s are to create a network of protected areas where Israeli, Jordan and Palestinian people are working together in the protection of wildlife.

By utilization environment friendly components that are adapted to the local habitats they create sustainable green oases in the respective communities. Therewith they hope to develop awareness for the immense value of the water-ressorce. At the same time people on both sites of the border are working together in protecting the nature and by doing that, they formes a common future.
